Press release:

DIFFERENT
TRAINS GALLERY presents M.C. Escher +, an exhibition of original prints by the late Dutch Graphic Artist, plus 2D & 3D works by contemporary ‘math artists’, presented in conjunction with G4G13, the 13th Biennial Gathering 4 Gardner Conference - April 13 & 14, 2018, in Decatur.

(Decatur, Georgia) -- DIFFERENT TRAINS GALLERY, 432 East Howard Avenue no. 24, presents M.C. Escher +, an exhibition of nearly 50 prints by the late Dutch Graphic Artist, plus original 2D and 3D works by contemporary math artists Dick Esterle, George Hart, Miranda Herrick, Paul Hildebrandt, Akio Hizume, Marc Pelletier, Clark Richert, Erin Sledd, Fabien Vienne and Scott Vorthman. The show opens to the public with an artists’ reception on Saturday, April 14, from 5 - 9 pm and continues through June 16.

M.C. Escher + is presented in conjunction with G4G13, the 13th Biennial Gathering 4 Gardner Conference  founded by Tom Rodgers, the late husband of DIFFERENT TRAINS GALLERY owner/partner Sarah Garvin Rodgers.  For two decades, Tom Rodgers led the way in bringing together, from all over the world, talented people in the arts and sciences, from mathematicians and logicians and magicians, to sculptors and puzzle and game inventors. This often resulted in spectacular interactions and collaborations, very much in the spirit of Martin Gardner (1914-2010), the American popular mathematics and science writer. A leading authority on Lewis Carroll, Gardner’s most successful book, The Annotated Alice, sold over a million copies. As well as being considered one of the most important magicians of the twentieth century and the dean of American puzzlers, he was best known known for creating and sustaining interest in ‘recreational mathematics’, primarily through his “Mathematical Games” columns which ran in Scientific American magazine for 25 years. Gardner helped to introduce Americans to the work of M.C. Escher when one of the artist’s iconic prints appeared on the cover of Scientific American in 1961.

This year, thanks in part to DIFFERENT TRAINS GALLERY and the Decatur Arts Alliance, the public is invited to join in the Gathering 4 Gardner for the first time in its quarter century history. The 13th biennial conference will be highlighted with a street fair on, appropriately, Friday the 13th of April, from 4 - 6 pm, on East Howard Avenue between Hillyer Place and Sycamore Place, in Decatur’s ‘Depot District’. Visitors can enjoy activities such as mathematical sculpture building or observing, puzzle solving and a math walk, as well as street magicians and jugglers. They’ll also get a sneak peek at the M.C. Escher + exhibition at DIFFERENT TRAINS GALLERY. Later that evening, Professor Doris Schattschneider of Moravian College will present “Math & M.C. Escher’s Art”, a free lecture at the Decatur Presbyterian Church (205 Sycamore Street), a short walk from the gallery. Doors open at 7:30 and the presentation begins at 8 pm.

“This convergence of art and math, and collaboration between G4G and DIFFERENT TRAINS GALLERY is one of the most exciting and enlightening projects I’ve been involved with in my 25 years of bringing art to Decatur”, says Shawn Vinson, Gallery Director/Partner. “Not only is this the biggest exhibit of Escher’s prints in Atlanta for over a decade, it’s a fascinating look at how his work continues to influence ‘artistic mathematicians’ and ‘mathematical artists’. After all, math is the highest form of art.”
