KOSMO's VINYL of the Week:
This week we are in one of the temples of American music, the Sun Recording Studio, Memphis, Tennessee, at 706 Union Ave, for Roy Orbison's "A Cat Named Domino" from 1957... "Being a smart lad, the Texas born and raised Roy Orbison took his band to see Sam Phillips at Sun in Memphis, Tennessee and, after a hit with "Ooby Dooby", the Teen Kings split and Roy stayed. At Sun, Roy recorded mostly rockabilly and was told by house producer Jack Clement he would never make it as a ballad singer. One of the few times I have been truly speechless was when, in a generic Middle American hotel, out of nowhere, Roy Orbison got in the same elevator as me - just the two of us - him of course in shades, I could not muster a word - then the doors opened and he was gone ! Like a dream, only real - which is not a bad description of his music !" - KV
