KOSMO's VINYL of the Week: This week we are in New York City on 9th August, 1937, with Count Basie and His Orchestra for the first recording of Edgar Battle & Eddie Durham's "Topsy", first released on 78RPM by Decca... "It was Ian Dury that made me aware that there was more to Count Basie than an old man in a sailors cap. "Topsy" was recorded in 1937, not long after Basie and his band had set up camp in the Woodside Hotel, Harlem. Keep in mind that this was the hot Dance Music of the time and the audiences were young. The Count & Co. had their work cut out to impress the dancers of the Savoy and Roseland Ballrooms - but they sure got there !" KV
