KOSMO's VINYL of the Week: This week we are in New York City on January 28th, 1955 with 'Big' Joe Turner and his Blues Kings for "Flip, Flop and Fly", released on Atlantic as both 78 and 45 RPMs... "Joe Turner was born in Kansas City, Missouri where he grew up and became known as "The Singing Barman". He cut his first record in 1938. Best described as a jump blues shouter, he did pave the way for a style that became known as rock'n'roll. Elvis Presley was a huge fan and sang this on TV when it was still a hit for Big Joe. I was lucky enough to see him perform live in 1980 at a club called Tramps on E.15th St, NYC. Nearly 70, he still sang like a lion, seated low in a chair with a vice-like grip on the microphone and, with his consent, I bought him a drink - top shelf whiskey !" - KV
