KOSMO's VINYL of the Week

? and the Mysterians, "96 Tears"

? and the Mysterians
KOSMO's VINYL of the Week:
This week we're in Bay City, Michigan back in 1966 for ? and the Mysterians' "96 Tears", first released on the local Pa-Go-Go label and 'picked up' by Cameo...

"When punk rock hit London, there was a shortage of records to play that fit the bill as to what was now cool. Out of this came the discovery of several lost gems from the past and "96 Tears" (never a hit in the UK) was one of them. I remember the young Elvis Costello (still with day job) telling me that when he got a band together, it was going to sound like this." - KV

James Blake, "If the Car Beside You Moves Ahead"

James Blake, Car
KOSMO's VINYL of the Week:
Back in the here and now this week, released in January I believe, James Blake's "If The Car Beside You Moves Ahead"...

"Both of my lads were surprised to hear me listening to this one - but there's 'something about it'. It kind of reminds me of the feel of some of the early line up of Roxy Music with Eno, and for James Blake is a return to some of his earlier, more left of centre style." - KV

Bob Crosby and his Orchestra, "Big Noise from Winnetka"

big noise from winnetka
KOSMO's VINYL of the Week:
This week it's back to 1938 for Bob Crosby & His Orchestra (featuring the Bobcats) 1938 "Big Noise from Winnetka"...

"This tune was first introduced to me via Martin Scorsese and the soundtrack to "Raging Bull". I was fortunate enough to witness some of the editing of that flick and to be at the first big-screen screening of it. People forget now, but "Raging Bull" was given the thumbs down when it came out and, at the time, considered a 'flop'." - KV

Burning Spear, "Live Good"

Burning Spear, Marcus Garvey
KOSMO's VINYL of the Week:
This week we're off to Kingston, Jamaica for Burning Spear's "Live Good", from his 1975 album "Marcus Garvey"...

"Burning Spear started out in 1969 as a duo, then were a trio and, by 1976, was Winston Rodney alone. The line up for the Jack Ruby produced "Marcus Garvey" LP and its dub version, "Garvey's Ghost", was Rodney, Rupert Willington and Delroy Hinds with backing by The Black Disciples. It is one of the jewels in the crown of reggae music and an absolutely essential record for anyone interested in that music." - KV

    of the Week

"The Record Shop is where I learned about the world beyond the one I had lived in. People like Curtis Mayfield, Lou Reed, Burning Spear and Fela Kuti showed me their worlds, its joys and struggles.
I had never even heard the word "ecology" before Marvin Gaye introduced me to it!"
