Now that the Gates of Hell are closed . . .
"When I was a freshman in college, a professor opened the first day of class by asking the “young ladies on the front row” to “please cross your legs”.
They complied, quizzically, then the professor stated, “now that the gates of hell are closed . . . we can begin.”
These drawings are my response to his remark. Asserting female sexuality and eroticism to challenge male dictated hierarchies. Women will not be defined by phallocentrism."

- Luzene Hill, 2019
Luzene Hill is a multi-media artist, best known for socially engaged conceptual installations, reflecting interdisciplinary scholarship in visual art, women's studies, and Native American culture.
Through work informed by pre-contact culture of the Americas, Hill advocates for indigenous sovereignty - linguistic, cultural and personal sovereignty. Recent work, employing indigenous matrilineal motifs, asserts female agency and challenges male dictated hierarchies.
An enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee, Hill has exhibited throughout the U.S., in Canada, Russia, Japan and the UK. Awards include the 2019 Ucross Fellowship, 2016 Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Fellowship in Visual Arts, 2015 Eiteljorg Museum Fellowship and 2015 First Peoples Fund Fellowship. Her work is featured in Susan C. Power's book, "Art of the Cherokee: Prehistory to the Present", Josh McPhee's book, "Celebrate People's History!: The Poster Book of Resistance and Revolution", and the PBS Documentary, “Native Art NOW!”.
